Introduction
:
The British called Shimla the "Queen of Hill Stations." Situated
in the north-West Himalayas, Shimla the summer capital of India before
independence is now the capital of Himachal Pradesh. Shimla derives its name
from "Shyamala";- the goddess Kali, whose temple existed in the
dense forest that covered Jakhu Hill in the early 19th century. The English
named it Simla.

Shimla
is well connected by air, road and rail with all parts of Himachal Pradesh,
and the neighboring states of Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir and the
Union territory of Chandigarh. Covering the area of 18 sq. km. at a height
of 7,238 ft. Shimla is surrounded by pine, deodar, oak and rhododendron
forests. Its well developed facilities, easy accessibility and numerous
attractions make it one of Indian's most popular and biggest hill station.
A narrow-railway links Kalka with Shimla. This important rail-link was
built in 1924 and its "toy trains" still ply between the two
stations, passing through 105 tunnels and beautiful rail-road stations.
Half-way through the journey, after Solan, the lights of Shimla flow in the
distance, looking like glimmering jewels studding the dark green of the
mountains. The train takes six hours, and at every stop on the journey are
smiling faces giving a warm welcome.
Attractions :
» The Mall - The Mall is the main shopping centre of
Shimla. It also has many restaurants, clubs, banks, bars, Post Offices and
tourist offices. The Gaiety Theatre is also situated there. People walk up
and down the Mall slowly, stopping to gossip, as it is the main meeting
place for everyone. The Ridge and Scandal point are the two main meeting
points at the Mall.
» Jakhu Hill - 2 kms. from Shimla, at a height of
8000 ft, Jakhu Hill is the highest peak and offers a beautiful view of the
town and of the snow-covered Himalayas. At the top of the Hill, is an old
temple of Hanuman, which is also the home of countless playful monkeys
waiting to be fed by all visitors.
» Kufri - 16 kms. from Shimla at a height of 8,600
ft. Kufri is the winter sports capital. During winter, visitors have the
facility for skiing. The skiing season is at its best during January and
February. Equipment for sking is available from HPTDC winter sports club at
Kufri. Apart from skiing, Kufri is a lovely picnic spot with a beautiful
view of the hills around and the snowy peaks. There is also a zoo that
delights children.

The beauty of Manali lies in the Beas river flowing through the valley with
fruit orchards and conifer slopes climbing upto the snowcapped Himalayan
peaks. Manali is Situated at the Northern end of the Kullu Valley, Manali
has spectacular views of snowcapped peaks and wooded slopes. The Beas rushes
along its rocky course amid grassy meadows carpeted with wild flowers and
wagtails hop along from stone to stone along the stream's edge. There are
marvelous walks too, through dappled orchards and fairy-tale forests of
deodar.

» Hadimba Temple - Hadimba or Dhungiri temple in
Manali is one of the most important temples in the region. This four-story
wooden temple is located in the middle of a forest called the Dhungiri Van
Vihar. Winding paths through forests and glades of whispering Deodars form
the setting for the majestic wooden temple of Hidimba Devi in Manali. The
motorable road is shaded by Chestnuts, Chinars and tall deciduous Deodars.
This forested backdrop enthral one?s spirit and refresh one?s mind all along
the uphill path.
» Arjun Gufa (5-kms) - On the left bank of the Beas,
5-km from Manali near the village of Prini, is the 'Arjun Gufa' or the cave
of Arjuna. In here Arjuna practised austerities to get Pashupata Ashtra or
weapon from Lord Indra.
» Rohtang Pass (13-kms) - Situated about 50-km from
Manali town, at an altitude of 4,111m on the highway to Keylong, is the
Rohtang Pass. There is a beautiful Dasohar Lake left of the Pass. The Pass,
which provides the only access to the Lahaul Valley, is open from June to
November each year. Snowfall is, however, unpredictable and blizzards can
close the Pass even during this period. Here one sees the majesty of the
mountains at its height and splendour. A few km away from the pass is the
Sonapani glacier and, slightly to the left are the twin peaks of
Gaypan-jagged pyramid of rock, snow streaked and snow crowned.

A dream land of the East- Darjeeling has been a popular hill station since
the British period. Darjeeling has been gifted with a beautiful natural
scenery. It is surrounded by lush green tea gardens, and has the highest
Railway Station in the world-The Darj.

Darjeeling
is surrounded by lofty mountains. Except for the monsoon months and if
weather is clear then the Kanchenjunga peak can be seen. Down below in the
valley flow the rivers swollen by rain water or melting snow. Darjeeling is
a fascinating place rich in natural beauty and surrounded by the Buddhist
monasteries. Its beauty surpasses any other hill station.
Darjeeling has some of the lovely tea plantations (estates) in the country.
One can visit these plantations and watch tea being processed. Darjeeling is
a place where one feels as if being in the lap of mother nature. Due to the
vast and abundance of natural splendor Darjeeling is called queens of hill
stations. Darjeeling is also a trekkers paradise and the Gorkha hill council
has provided ample trekking facilities for the adventure loving people.
The toy train coming from Siliguri is some thing which is liked by the
elders and the children equally. The real fun in coming to Darjeeling is on
the toy train. It takes six to seven hours to cover a distance of 82 kms and
the slow speed gives you enough time to watch and appreciate the beauty
which nature has provided it. This train passes through the Forests,
waterfalls, over deep valleys and through the mountains and tunnels.
